ADVANCED OG Prep Time, Content Generation, Framing, Meching, Role Division Training Session 10.02.2016

BUT I AM DOING THE BASICS SO WELL... Basics are really important in debates However, more advanced concepts and strategies can improve your performance This does not mean you should stop doing the basics(in fact, most debates are won by doing the basics really well) Try to implement them step by step Do this actively, don’t expect to improve by simply debating more Discover what works best for you-there is no unique recipe to successfully doing OG

PREP TIME Stay calm Bring the obvious stuff Key thing about OG is to control the debate-you have more power than other teams to do this by being first

PREP TIME Thinking time- at least 3 minutes Do not forget about burdens-discuss burdens Force yourself not to think of arguments first-think about actors, and means through which the policy will be implemented, groups affected etc Think about how you will frame the debate Form arguments Discuss Mechanism Pre-buttal/POI’s

USEFUL TIPS TO GET BETTER AT PREP Do it on your own/outside session (if you have some spare time between lunch and your next lecture, or just feel bored, or just want to get better) Try to do it in less than 15 minutes-it’s rarely the case you’ll have that much Don’t be afraid to prep hard motions/ones that you don’t feel like doing at that point Force yourself to stick to a prep structure Debate in OG against good teams

FRAMING(1) How can I make the debate seem about what my teams need it to be? No single definition of what framing is, but it helps when you do it Shows the judges a clear placement of your team in the debate dynamics, makes your case more clear, and, if not challenged, the metric will be the one the judges will use when giving the call Framing should come from PM, and be reinforced and justified by DPM

FRAMING(2) Questions to answer through framing Where the debate is happening (or what are the most likely situations in which the motion will apply) Where does it happen? Any specific context? Political/ideological/historical/military/economic What are the particular harms that the groups are facing (Show how other team has not tackled those harms) Are all the other team’s arguments relevant after the framing you have done (e.g. Their argument would have worked in a functional economy, but it is not the case in the debate)

FRAMING (3) Take ownership of the strongest OPP material In prep time, agree on what that is very likely to be Most debates are not one-sided so there will be some legit stuff coming from opp You need to find a way (in prep time) to mitigate that as much as possible and take ownership of it Never use a fact without a plausible logical explanation (it just looks like you are throwing examples at their case

MECHANISM Write it down towards the end of your prep Think about how long it will take you to get it done (so that you leave yourself enough time) When you exclude things(situations/types of actions etc.) make a justification of why it is sensible to exclude that thing from a debate Persuade the judge that it is in the spirit of the motion Sometimes it’s better to be vague (nobody expects you to come up with an economics treaty in 15 minutes) Think about POCs and how you will answer them-in prep time!!

MOTION 1: THBT developing nations should distribute as a dividend to citizens all income derived from natural resource extraction

MOTION 2 THBT that EU member states should nationalise Oil and Gas Resources to Surrender Total Ownership and Control to an EU-run Energy Agency

MOTION 3 THW allow insurance companies to consider the results of genetic tests in assessing potential customers

PM Be passionate, believe in the policy you are proposing (makes difference) Create momentum during your speech Clarity comes from good notes (Ed’s ‘one page at a time’ )

PM(2) Tipping point – the situation has reached a tipping point, something extremely bad has just happened or is about to happen  need to act There is a trend that is being created, that we need to stop/encourage Or maybe just a great idea that has never been done before Then frame the problem Try to be as reasonable-sounding with the mech as possible(remember justify concessions) Take a POI (preferably from closing)

DPM ‘Guard dog’ of the PM speech The 4F’s FIX FRAME FIGHT FIELD(burn) In introduction, re-frame the debate Do it a bit differently than the PM, but not completely different (you want to show that you have the same line, but that you can be original) Your partner is never confusing, never was confused
