What is an angle and how are they made?
3
An angle is when two rays meet together out in space (not outer space).
4
When the 2 rays come together, they connect at their endpoints and form a vertex.
5
Now you have what is called an angle.
6
Angles can be seen everywhere in our world.
7
In geometry we will be identifying angles, drawing angles and measuring angles.
8
Let’s watch a video about angles! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50eVno0s1DI&feature=rel ated Animation: Types of Angles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50eVno0s1DI&feature=rel ated
9
After an angle is made from _____ ______, it can be given a name like acute, obtuse, right or straight. What is my name?
10
Let’s take a look at how angles get their names… A circle is measured by math degrees and it measures 360 degrees (that’s all the way around the circle).
11
Well, if you cut a circle in half it measures 180 degrees (half of 360 is 180). This is where angles come in ! 180 ○
12
The first kind of angle is a straight angle. That’s where two rays meet together and lay flat. 180 degrees
13
If the angle is laying completely flat, we say that is measures 180 degrees. Hold your arms out straight.
14
If an angle is standing straight up on one end and laying flat on the other, we call that a right angle. (I could draw a square in the corner.)
15
A right angle measures exactly 90 degrees. Try it with your arms.
16
Now, if you go any degrees to the left of a right angle, you will get an obtuse angle. It measures any where from 91 to 179.
17
If you go towards the ray that is flat, you make the angle smaller and that’s called an acute angle. (A “cute” little angle!)
18
Acute angles measure from 89 to 1. I am soooo cute!
19
Now, we have been talking about kinds of angles, but where do we get our measurements from? A cool instrument called a protractor is what we use to measure an angle so we know what name to give it.
