3 4 A sense of purpose Back to basics How far do you go? Twenty words or less

4 Action points Ch.4. Write down, in two or three sentences, the purpose of your planned paper. Start with the phrase The purpose of this paper is to...'. Consider verbs such as 'show', `demonstrate', `present', `synthesize', `explore', `review', `discuss' and 'identify'. Make sure you are explicit about what you are trying to do. Then note how you are going to deliver the purpose: `... by illustrating with case examples...'; '... by describing the results of an experiment conducted...'; '... by reviewing the current literature on... '

Analyzing: can the student distinguish between the different parts? appraise, compare, contrast, criticize, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test. Evaluating: can the student justify a stand or decision? appraise, argue, defend, judge, select, support, value, evaluate Creating: can the student create new product or point of view? assemble, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, write.
