The Atlantic Provinces o This area of Canada is believed to be the area where Vikings first landed over 1000 years ago o Leif Ericsson reached and named it Vinland around the year 1000 o Artifacts made of iron prove this is more than a myth o L’ Anse aux Meadows has reconstructed buildings and is now a popular vacation site o Today most of the people live along the coast except in P.E.I. and have English, Irish, Scottish, or French backgrounds

Newfoundland & Labrador o Newfoundland was rediscovered by John Cabot in 1497 and he called it New Found Land o It became England’s first overseas colony o Settlers moved there permanently in the 1600’s o 2001 the area was officially renamed Newfoundland & Labrador o It is the easternmost part of North America o It is an important transatlantic communication & transportation center o Guglielmo Marconi received the first wireless telegraph from across the Atlantic here in 1901 o Located near the Grand Banks which was the best fishing area of the world

Acadia o Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia were all once part of what was called Acadia o French settlement area in the 1600’s o Britain & France argued and fought over this area several times o 1755 Britain banned all people of French decent o Acadians moved to Quebec, New Brunswick, France, the West Indies, and Louisiana (Cajuns)

10. Acadia (Part II) o Britain won the Seven Years War in 1763 and many Acadians moved back o However the British had taken over the best farm ground o Therefore the Acadians took up fishing & lumbering to make a living

11. The Maritime Economy o Maritime means related to navigation or commerce on the sea o These provinces depend greatly on the fishing industry o 1800’s this region was a leader in ship building and the lumber industry, which went hand in hand o Today Nova Scotia is still well known for shipbuilding o Fishing has changed greatly! o A ban on cod fish had to be created to protect the species in 2003, which created loss of jobs o Fish farming, or aquaculture, is a growing industry
