2. Why a Literacy Class? Reading proficiency in adolescents requires students be able to  identify the words on the page accurately and fluently  have enough knowledge and thinking ability to understand the words, sentences and paragraphs  be motivated and engaged enough to use their knowledge and thinking ability to understand and learn from the text

3. How we will work on literacy  Guided Reading (small group)  Read Alouds (Teacher Modeling)  Whole class reading and discussions  Balanced Literacy (reading many different genres)

4. How to support literacy at home  Make sure your child is reading every night for 30 minutes  Provide different types of reading materials at home at their level  Read together (newspaper articles, magazine articles, cooking recipes…)
