THE SEASONS
2
The Seasons The seasons occur because of the tilt of the earth and our revolution around the sun
4
When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, it is summertime for us, and wintertime for the southern hemisphere Spring and Fall are the transitions in between
5
► The northern and southern hemisphere have opposite seasons
8
Solstice: the point at which one hemisphere is tilted the furthest away from the sun (summer and winter) Equinox: the point at which the sun’s rays are pointed directly at the equator (fall and spring)
11
► The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are the lines that the sun points at the solstices (23.5° latitude) ► The Arctic and Antarctic circles are the lines indicating where the sun cannot reach at the solstices (66° latitude)
12
Tropics and Arctic Circle Arctic Circle Antarctic Circle This is what they look like when drawn on a map
13
-This shift in the sun causes temperatures to vary throughout the year -The tilt of the suns rays mean that the higher latitudes get less heat
14
So… -The tropics are hot all year -The higher latitudes are cold all year -It switches back and forth for the rest
15
It also means that… ► The length of our days and nights change over the year ► The summer solstice is the longest day and ► The winter solstice is the longest night
16
Seasons Jigsaw ► EXPLAIN your group’s season. What kind of weather does it experience and why? ► Use your notes and your book to help you.
17
Journal: Use notes and vocab ► How are weather and climate different? ► How are the seasons influenced by climate and related to weather? ► Which season is your favorite and why?
