The game is played with 2 teams. Each team consists of 5 players on the court at a time. The object of the game is to outscore your opponent by shooting the ball into your basket and preventing them from putting the ball into theirs.

o The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. o The court is divided into two main sections by the mid-court line. o On a competition level, a team is made up of 5 players playing on the court and 5 players sitting on the bench that can be used for substitution during the whole period of the game.

Teams are assigned a basket at which to shoot for the first half, and they switch ends at half-time. Each player is assigned a position when playing. This position is usually determined by the height of the player. The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by passing or dribbling.

o Points are scored any time the ball goes through the basket. o 3 points are granted if the shot is taken beyond the 3- points line, and 2 points are awarded for a basket made from anywhere else on the court. o A free throw is worth 1 point.

Basketball fouls are penalties assessed(charged) by the referees for rough play to keep a player from gaining an advantage over another player. A player who is fouled is awarded the ball out of bounds unless the foul occurred during the act of shooting, in which case the player who is fouled is awarded 2 free throws.

Each player is allowed 5 fouls before they are removed from the game.
