5. CUBISM  In the four decades from 1870-1910, inventions such as photography, cinematography, sound recording, the telephone, the motor car and the airplane heralded the dawn of a new age.  Artist needed a 'new way of seeing' that expanded the possibilities of art in the same way that technology was extending the boundaries of communication and travel so that art would not become extinct.  This new way of seeing was called Cubism. Cubism was the first abstract style of modern art.  Cubism is an art movement in which three-dimensional objects are pictured from many different angles at the same time.  The images seen in cubist paintings are impossible to see in real life at one time.  Cubist paintings depict real people, places or objects, but not from a single viewpoint. Viewpoint-is a position of observation. The viewpoint is a place where something can be seen.  Cubism is a style and method of abstracting an image. Abstraction- is the deforming of realistic imagery.

6. Pablo Picasso was born in Magala, Span, in 1881. Pablo Picasso is known as one of the father of Cubism. Pablo Picasso broke many different boundaries during his time period which helped make him a great artist. 8. The Cubists believed that the traditions of Western art had become exhausted. In efforts to add more excitement to the art they applied expressive qualities of art from other cultures, especially African art. However, they were not interested in the true religious or social symbolism of the different cultural objects, but valued them superficially for their expressive style.
