A polynomial is an expression made up of one or more variables and numbers using the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and powers that are whole numbers. Examples: x² + 5x + 4 9acny 42 n³ 7y³ + 3y²n - 6n² + 8x + 16 42 6 n Why are these expressions NOT POLYNOMIALS? 9a9a x² + 5x + 4x4x 7n ¼ + 6x³ a ⅔ division power that’s not a whole # power that’s not a whole #

Polynomials are made up of terms. A term is either a single number or variable or the product of several numbers and/or variables. In other words, the “stuff” separated by the + and – signs. Identify the terms in each polynomial below. x² + 5x + 4 7y³ + 3y²n - 96n² + 8x + 16 4n³y² + 3a + 6p²y² - 82y – 6n9t + 8

Coefficients are the numbers or constants in front of variables. Identify the coefficients in each term in each polynomial. x² + 5x + 47y³ + 3y²n - 6n² + 8x + 16 4n³y² + 3a + 6p²y² - 82y – 6n9t + 8 1, 5, 4 7, 3, -6, 8, 16

Like terms are terms that have the same variables with the same exponents. Identify the like terms in each polynomial below. x² + 5x + 4x 7y³ + 3y²n - 6y²n² + 8y³ + 16 4n³y² + 3a + 6p²y² - 82a + 6n³y² 9t + 8t To simplify a polynomial means to add all of the like terms. Simplify each polynomial above. 17t 15y³ + 3y²n – 6y²n² +16 x² + 9x 10n³y² - 79a + 6p²y²

1.Write an example of a polynomial with 3 terms. 2.List the coefficients in each term in the polynomial. 4n³y + 7y² - 3n 3. Copy the following polynomial on your paper. Circle each term. 8p³q² + 3c + 9p²y² - 82ac + 86n³y²z 4. Simplify the polynomial. 13n³y² + 3c + 6p²y² - 2a + 8n³y² + 3p²y² - 2py 5. How many terms are in this polynomial? 8p³q² + 3c + 9p²y² - 6n³y²z + 13n³y² - 6p²y² + 8n³y² + 3p²y² - 2py
