“Spiritual” What Does It Mean? 1. Spiritually speaking: not literal (1 Cor. 10:3-4; Rev. 11:8) 2. Spirit beings: angels and demons (Eph. 6:12) 3. Spirit of the Divine: God (Jn. 4:24), Christ (Lk. 23:46), and the Holy Spirit (Lk. 3:22) 4. Spirit of mankind (1 Cor. 2:11; 1 Thess. 5:23)
4
False Notions of Spirituality n More emotion n Innovative worship n Small, informal groups n Positive image only n Appear pious n Monastic lifestyle n Ascetic lifestyle n Miraculous gifts n Charitable acts alone n Morality alone n Church attendance alone n Law keeping n Intellectualism n Church law n Health and wealth
5
Marks of the Spiritually Minded Led by the spiritual words of the Holy Spirit, not by the words of the world (1 Cor. 2:14-15; Rom. 8:4-5; Rev. 2-3) Grows toward spiritual maturity, not remaining an immature babe (1 Cor. 3:1; Heb. 5:11 – 6:1) Focused on the eternal spiritual home, not on the passing earthly home (1 Cor. 15:44,46) Concerned for the spiritual needs of the brethren, not selfish (Gal. 6:1)
6
Marks of the Spiritually Minded Appreciates God’s spiritual blessings, not forgetting them or throwing them away (Rom. 15:27; 1 Cor. 9:11; Eph. 1:3) Seeks to understand and apply God’s spiritual wisdom in the heart, not just having a Bible at home or in the hand (Col. 1:9) Associates regularly with other spiritually minded Christians, not the world (1 Pet. 2:5) Busy doing spiritual works in God’s service and worshipping God, not preoccupied by worldly things or activities (1 Pet. 2:5)
7
Being A Spiritual Person n Spirituality is expected of all Christians (1 Cor. 3:1) n Spirituality starts on the inside, not the outside (Jn. 4:20-24) n Spirituality does not come automatically or by accident. It must be actively developed: – Spiritual words read and obeyed (1 Cor. 2:13-14) – Spiritual songs sung (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) – Spiritual prayers offered (Rom. 8:26-27) – Spiritual fruit cultivated (Gal. 5:22-25)
