Panel Discussion - A panel (group) has a discussion organized around a topic. i.e., smart phone addiction, college and the job market Overall purpose: reproduce features of a small discussion group for the benefit of a larger group. Objectives: - Provide information - Discuss and analyze a topic from different perspectives - Encourage audience members’ interest in the topic. - The discussion lasts approximately 30 minutes (including a Q & A session).

Panel Discussion Advantages for students: - Practice group discussion skills. asking for and giving opinions. agreeing/disagreeing, qualifying statements, asking for clarification, etc. - Encourage social learning. - Practice logical thinking and problem solving.

Panel Discussion - Panel members act as “experts” on the topic. For us, that means that each panelist must read and research the topic so that he/she has a good working knowledge of the topic. (educate and prepare yourself) - Each panel (group) must conduct research and find sources of information about the topic (minimum: 5 sources). Aim: Get a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Panel Discussion Preparation: - Make sure you have done thorough research. - You can bring notes (i.e., important points you want to share: facts, stats, etc.) - Absolutely NO SCRIPTS! Prepare similarly to your podcast preparation.

Panel Discussion Based on the reading/research, each panel must prepare a handout to provide for the audience. - The handout will include: - A list of readings (sources: minimum: 5) - Information on the topic to help the audience better understand the topic and the discussion. - The handout must be well-organized and follow a format that allows people to easily read it (see examples)

Panel Discussion Each panel (group) will also prepare an agenda - The questions that will be discussed. - These will be approved by me.

Panel Discussion - Deadlines Agenda: May 1 Handout: May 5 (Wednesday: I will be distributing them the next day). Discussion Days: May 8 & 13 - All of today’s information is available on the website. Make sure to read the Task 2 information sheet.

What are the panel members’ responsibilities? - PREPARE – know the topic well, prepare for questions - listen, speak clearly (voice, language, AND explanation) - ask for clarification - have courtesy (polite) 4. What challenges could this task have? - argumentation -collecting sufficient information - organizing ideas/opinions - unknown/uncertain contents – must anticipate - explaining background info to audience

How should the university approach mandatory Christian Education with students of other religions? 4. What are some alternatives for Christian education?
