Are single species (SS) and ecosystem models (EM) being compared/complementary in each center? If so, how? NEMoW II
2
Compared? Complementary? 5/7 Centers surveyed compare SS and EM in some way 2/7 Centers used complementary SS and EM Results of survey not clear for complementary use, there may be more Pie charts can’t show uncertainty very well.
3
How? Complementary outputs from SS and EM used in management process together Complementary outputs from SS and EM presented, but only SS formally used (SS required to have ecosystem considerations) Independent SS and EM model results directly compared with each other SS model results used in EM SS model results challenged in EM or EM model results challenged in SS EM as operating model for SS MSE SS as operating model for SS MSE, with EM components SS model results compared with alternative SS models, need process for EM

No Movement Hypothesis 1 Hypothesis 2 Antarctic krill : Biophysical models complement the SS models by addressing question of how an overall quota should be spatially allocated (from G. Watters) Consider trade-offs between fishery and predator performance under alternative catch allocation scenarios, in order to manage the risk to krill-dependent predators

Sablefish and shortspine thornyheads are the primary longspine thornyhead predators, a SS model that included predation (M a function of biomass of predators) improved model fit to both the slope survey biomass estimates and length frequency data. One California Current example, ad hoc, unpublished, perhaps to be revisited someday...

Discussion fodder “It is not clear to me how the results of EM and SS models would formally be compared” >Depends on what we mean by “Formally” and by “compared” “What you see with our single species assessments is detailed investigation of sources of uncertainty. If this level of detail were to be done with EMs, the results would be ruled by uncertainty. This is one of the reasons we are not doing much EM right now.”
