What does my child needs to know?

The focus of the unit is on developing problem solving processes, rather than the practice of finding a solution. Students develop problem solving plans that include multiple strategies and explanations of them.

When solving a real-life problem, they will: Understand the problem. Make a plan. Carry out the plan. Look at the answer to see if it makes sense.

Your child must be able to: Create a model. Select a problem solving process to solve the situation. Orally describe the problem solving strategy or plan used to determine a solution.

The school library has 8 different Dinosaur books. Some have been checked out to students, leaving only 3 available in the library. How many Dinosaur books are checked out at this time?

Your child must be able to: Construct a graph using real objects or pictures in order to answer questions. Orally describe their findings. Give a comparison statement about their findings. Describe how many sticky notes are represented on their graph.

I need to inventory my sticky note collection for centers next week and need your help. Sort the sticky notes into 2 groups. Construct a real-object graph to represent the groups.

Use links on teacher web pages Count daily with your child. Play games such as: war, addition war, candy land. Help them practice counting on from a number other than 1. Give your child real life scenarios to solve such as: If I need 5 potatoes for dinner and I already peeled 3. How many more do I need to peel?
