What needs to be completed this year… We will now be preparing for our exam at the end of next year, for which the topic is crime television dramas. We will look at the exam layout and start looking at the content you need to learn today. Alongside that we will complete any retakes of CATS before Christmas and our last CAT: Moving image.

Exam Layout The exam you will sit will be one and a half hours long and will be split into two sections. The first section you will be answering questions based on crime dramas, using the knowledge that you will be learning from now on. Pre released material The second section of the exam will require you to prepare using the pre released material issued by the exam board. The material will include a scenario, where you will have to plan something based on the subject you are studying. For instance, they may ask you to plan for a crime television drama, suitable to be shown before the water shed.

When learning about crime television drama’s, we have to consider the key concepts that contribute to the style and conventions of each show. Those key concepts within crime television drama: Media language: forms and conventions Institutions Audience Representation

Media language: Form and conventions There are a number of defining conventions of television crime dramas, one being narrative. There are two main forms of narrative that crime drama’s use. One is that the crime is told and solved within one episode. For example Sherlock Holmes. What is the other form of narrative? Can you give an example? Narrative: the way in which a story is told

Different types of narrative Some crime drama’s choose to show and solve a crime within one episode, whereas others may show a series of episodes solving one crime, for example ITV drama series that are on for one week only, like ‘Appropriate adult’ showing at the moment. Narratives within crime drama are also often organised around binary opposites, for example the conflict between the forces of law and order and criminal activity.

Sherlock Homes We have already watched an episode of the BBC’s modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. The narrative of this show is that is shows and solves a crime within on episode. What are the benefits of having a narrative like this? Discuss on your tables and give reasons why

Whilst watching, you must think about the following: How does this differ from Sherlock Holmes? What are the benefits of it being a two part drama? Within those two different types of narrative you will also find different types of characters within the dramas that are solving the crimes. These can be defined in three ways: 1.Dramas which focus on the lives and work of the police themselves 2.Dramas which focus on the work of detectives 3.Dramas that focus on the work of other crime solving professionals. Can you think of one example for each of the above?

20 Homework LO: Understand what the different aspects of crime television drama that we will be learning about in the next three terms. Write a film review on any film of your choice. The film review must be: 300 words in length Written in the conventional style of a film review Have a star rating at the bottom The film review can be negative or positive and can be for a classic or modern film of your choice.
