Molecule Shapes VSPR
2
WHAT IS VSPR? Valence Shell Electron Repulsion The idea states that covalent bonds & lone electron pairs like to stay apart because they have the same charge Explains why molecules have their shapes
3
HYBRIDIZATION S & p orbitals mix to form a hybrid orbital This mix creates different angles which changes the shapes of the molecules based on the number of atoms & valence electrons
4
SHAPES Linear – the atoms form a straight line
6
SHAPES Linear – the atoms form a straight line Bent – the molecule looks bent
8
SHAPES Linear – the atoms form a straight line Bent – the molecule looks bent Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign
10
SHAPES Linear – the atoms form a straight line Bent – the molecule looks bent Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign Trigonal Pyramidal - a squished pyramid
12
SHAPES Linear – the atoms form a straight line Bent – the molecule looks bent Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign Trigonal Pyramidal - a squished pyramid Tetrahedral – a 4 faced pyramid
14
FINDING THE SHAPE See the flow chart handout How many “things” are attached to the central atom? Double bonds still count as one “thing” Lone pairs count the same as an attached atom
