The diary of Rueben Radcliffe, 1899-1900 By Kath Beattie
2
Beginning The bank takes away the Radcliffe’s house and store so they have to live in a tent for a while. They have to find their own food like eels and wild spinach. Rueben is working as a Kauri Gum digger which is a hard life.
3
Middle Rueben’s parents say that it wasn’t his fault but he knows he’s to blame, and he give away a whopper piece of gum. Rueben is being offered jobs of all sorts so he goes to his dad for advice. Rueben makes friends with the Dallies.
4
End Rueben goes on a boat to see the gum making progress and ends up travelling home by foot. The Radcliffe’s move to the Yates's and Rueben goes on a big muster out in the hill’s with a horse called “Buster”.
5
Fav Sentence “Eight hours sleep, eight hours play, eight work and eight bob a day.” I like this sentence because it is cool, rhyming and about money

Kauri gum is the hardened sap of Kauri trees, it is formed when trees are cut or split open. In order to protect the wound, the trees would bleed large amounts of sap. In the earlier days the gum was plentiful and could be found lying on the ground so the Maoris picked it up and used it for chewing gum, lighting fires, making dye for tattoos. Facts

Facts Kauri gum is still used for prized jewellery and is more valuable than in the 1900s, when it earned its name Poor Mans Gold. Kauri gum can be heated, carved and moulded into nearly any shape you can think of (with skill). Over the past 45,000 years or so, several Kauri forests have grown back in northern New Zealand but have died out or been chopped down
9
Facts The first European to write about Kauri gum was Captain Cook. He thought it came from the Mangroves, as he had found it on the mud flats. From 1845 to 1945 Kauri gum was one of New Zealand’s biggest exports.

Self Assessment I think I did really well with this because it is the biggest slide show that I have done and it didn’t take long, doing the map slide was the hardest part. It wasn’t that hard. I liked learning all about Kauri gum. Next time I want to put more pictures in.
