Solutions Provide an annual budget of the Preserve – Show people how their money is making a difference Change meeting schedule times Lower fees for use in the park Add research updates – Published articles, site reports, etc. so the public can see what research is happening Let the NPS take over the VCNP – It’s obvious that this is what the public wants

5. GIS Solutions Create several dynamic and interactive maps – Archaeological map – shows pictures and information of the site when you click on it – Ski trails – click on a specific ski trail and watch a helmet- cam video of a person going down the mountain – Fire maps – display a current/updated map of forest fire locations – Forest Restoration – there needs to be a page dedicated to the entire forest restoration project Maps, budgets, research, etc. – Budget map – displays what projects are going on in each area and how much money is being spent there

6. This interactive map example would allow a user to click on one of the archaeological sites that are labeled by the stars and be able to see pictures and information related to that specific site. Archaeological Map

Strategy Review the current GIS system and see if it meets the needs for the VCNP Evaluate the current data and see what can be created – Archaeological map suggestion can probably be implemented quickly Research updates need to be presented to the public Post the annual budget online and how money is being spent throughout the year

8. Improvement? Posting the budget will allow people to see where their tax- payer money is going Dynamic maps can get people excited and interested in visiting the park – More visitors = more money – More interest from Congress Presenting research and allowing access to data will allow visitors and researchers to see what impacts are happening around the VCNP

9. Changes The VCNP either needs to be taken over by the NPS, OR it needs to regain focus on it’s mission statement – The Trust should present itself as more open to the public Needs to be more investment in GIS – There is only 1 GIS specialist right now Indicates a lack of interest in the software? – Possible investment in a more robust GIS? The problems that are facing the VCNP seem to be more complicated than evaluating their GIS needs
