Moving West – 3 groups 1.White Americans – middle-class farmers and businesspeople who could afford to move and wanted to improve life 2.African Americans – escape violence and persecution from the South, most popular place to settle was Kansas 3.European immigrants – sought jobs working on railroad; wanted new opportunities
