1 INSPIRE Conference, Edinburgh 1 Theme Theme Soil inventories, providing a one-off assessment of soil conditions and/or properties at a point in time, and soil monitoring, providing a series of assessments showing how soil conditions and/or properties change over time. Soil mapping, enabling to identify areas with similar soil genesis and soil properties. Thematic maps derived from soil information Scope

2 Way of working Two parallel processes: –Based on existing databases, ISO norms, EU projects development of an UML model. –Description of Use Cases which were used to calibrate and validate the soil model. INSPIRE progress2

3 Need for Soil Data Increasing Prevention and mitigation of soil degradation Optimalisation sustainable agricultural and forest production Mitigation effects climate change Mitigation effects soil contamination Applications: very few at an European level; at national scale probably many hundreds. More than 100 User requirements and Reference Material were submitted. No EU directive is directly dealing with soils; European Soil Thematic Strategy adopted. INSPIRE progress3

4 Use Cases described Agri-Environmental Indicators: –Use Case Environmental Indicator Soil Erosion –Use Case Environmental Indicator Soil Quality –Use Case Environmental Indicator Contaminated Sites Thematic maps –Land irrigation suitability in Navarra (Spain) –Development of methodologies for soil salinity surveillance in the middle Ebro basin (Spain) –MARS project (Monitoring Agricultural Resources) –Restrictions for N and P in agriculture –Calculation threshold trace elements –Use of Soil Scape Viewer –Establishment Less Favoured Areas (France) Contaminated sites –Contaminated Land Register Austria –Use Case drinking water and soil contamination –Use Case Ecology and contamination –Use Case Contamination in relation to property Soil Monitoring –Use Case State of soil in Europe INSPIRE progress4

5 5 Use cases and legislation Use Cases Agri-Environmental Indicators: - Use Case Environmental Indicator Soil Erosion - Use Case Environmental Indicator Soil Quality - Use Case Environmental Indicator Contaminated Sites Thematic maps - Land irrigation suitability in Navarra (Spain) - Development of methodologies for soil salinity surveillance in the middle Ebro basin (Spain) - yield forecasting within the MARS project - Restrictions for N and P in agriculture - Calculation threshold trace elements - Use of Soil Scape Viewer - Establishment Less Favoured Areas (France) Contaminated sites - Contaminated Land Register Austria - Use Case drinking water and soil contamination - Use Case Ecology and contamination - Use Case Property and contamination Soil Monitoring - Use Case state of soil in Europe Directives CAP. Council regulation (EC) No 1782/2003 of 29 September 2003 establishing common rules for direct support schemes under the common agricultural policy. ● ● Council Directive 91/676/EEC of 12 December 1991 concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates form agricultural sources. ● Directive 200/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy. ●● ● Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. Energy from renewable resources. ● Directive 86/278/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. Sludge Directive. ● Directive 1999/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 April 1999 on the landfill and waste. ●●● Still under discussion: Less Favourite Areas (LFA) Intermediate areas. 6 6 Soil model Core soil model Modeled 4 use cases to show how the core can be extended so that these cases are able to function. INSPIRE progress6

7 7 Core model UC 1 UC 3 UC 4 UC 2

8 Major real world phenomena modelled Soil profiles Soil sites, soil plots, soil samples Soil delineated areas (determination based on certain soil characteristics) Soil characteristics changing over time. Soil monitoring. Soil contamination INSPIRE progress8

9 9 Thematic maps Monitoring Soil maps Soil profiles

10 Challenges met during modelling Scale depending items: introduction soil complex Not all national soil classification systems are compatible with the international soil classification system WRB (which is adopted as the international standard) DIS ISO 19156:2010 (Observation and Measurements) was still under development during modeling work. All Use Cases are based on the highest level of detail to be found in the profile descriptions. Detailing the core. INSPIRE progress10

11 Questions to be answered during testing Is the model applicable in praxis? Makes the level of detail sense? Are elements forgotten or too abundant? INSPIRE progress11

12 INSPIRE progress12 Thanks for your attention
