Motion Mrs. Gonzales MFMS

What is it? In your own words, define what you think MOTION is: _______________________________ How do we know when something has moved?

The Physics Definition…. An object is in motion when ITS DISTANCE FROM ANOTHER OBJECT IS CHANGING. You must use an object to compare it to: called the reference point.

A Reference Point Motion depends on its REFERENCE POINT. A Reference point is: A PLACE OR OBJECT USED TO COMPARE IF SOMETHING IS IN MOTION.

Consider this…. You are on a school bus and another school bus next to you is moving forward. It may feel like you are actually moving backward…

Describing and Measuring Motion We can describe motion by the DISTANCE CHANGED FROM A REFERENCE POINT. We can also determine an object’s SPEED.

Think about it… How do we know something is faster than another object? What do we need to measure in order to be certain that something is moving faster than another object? Discuss this with a partner…

SPEED In physics terms, SPEED is THE DISTANCE AN OBJECT TRAVELS IN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME. Formula: Speed is Distance divided by Time

Speed Facts… How Fast Do Things Go? Fastest Mammal Cheetah 70 mph Fastest Bird Peregrine Falcon 185 mph Fastest Insect Dragonfly 33 mph Fastest Transportation Apollo 5700 kmph 3420 mph Fastest Human ?Michael Johnson?? 10.352 m/s ?? mph

Velocity If you know an object’s speed AND the direction it’s going, you know its VELOCITY. Velocity- THE SPEED OF AN OBJECT IN A GIVEN DIRECTION.

Speed or Velocity??? Is this describing the speed or velocity of the object? A cyclist travels at 15 km/hr. _________ A horse runs at 7 m/s eastward. __________ Discuss with a partner… Would air traffic controllers need to know the speed or velocities of air crafts? Why?

Write 2 facts from the videoclip on Speed and Velocity www.brainpop.com

The Physics of Skateboards
