Idioms An idiom is an expression which doesn ’ t mean the literal meaning of its parts, but has a figurative/metaphorical meaning as a phrase in a given language e.g. English. KEEP TABS ON or KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED

All skin and bone – very underweight Barking up the wrong tree – being wrong In donkeys years – a very long time Cost an arm and a leg – very expensive Spitting feathers – very angry Like a bull in a china shop – very clumsy Face like thunder – looks very angry Yellow belly - coward Tickled pink – very pleased Let the cat out of the bag – Tell a secret Ants in your pants – excited and cannot keep still Benjamin of the family – youngest child A storm in a teacup – being exaggerated out of proportion

Where do they come from? They develop over years, often from local/colloquial phrases or sometimes from literature. Often they relate to a visual or imagined visual experience e.g. ‘ bull in a china shop ’ = imagine the damage!
