Do Now/Quick Write: Gary Gilmore, renowned criminal who demanded his own death sentence after killing two people, said, “Death is the only inescapable, unavoidable, sure thing. We are sentenced to die the day we’re born.” What do you think he meant by this? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Aim: What is the significance of each character in To Build a Fire? London journeyed to the Yukon Territory in 1897. In November 1897, he staked a claim in Henderson Creek. Alaska and the northern wilds became influences for his most lasting works like White Fang, Call of the Wild, and To Build a Fire.

What is the significance of each character in To Build a Fire? To Build a Fire is a prime example of the literary movement of naturalism. Naturalists saw evolution as proof that the world is deterministic and that humans do not have free will. Behavior is based on a series of links (each of which causes the next).
