2 What is a cover letter? A cover letter is a letter of introduction attached to, or accompanying another document such as a curriculum vitae (CV). 1. Employers may look for individualized and thoughtfully written cover letters. 2. Badly written cover letters are a sign of carelessness, a lack of interest and a poor education.

3 When is a cover letter used? Job seekers frequently send a cover letter along with their CV or employment application as a way of introducing themselves to potential employers and explaining their suitability for the desired position.

4 Why is a cover letter important? 1. Employers may look for individualized and thoughtfully written cover letters. 2. Badly written cover letters are a sign of carelessness, a lack of interest, and a poor education.

5 3 categories of cover letters 1. The application letter which responds to a known job opening. 2. The prospecting letter which inquires about possible positions. 3. The networking letter which requests information and assistance in the sender's job search. We will be learning how to write an application letter.

6 Format Cover letters are generally one page in length; they are divided into a header, introduction, body, and closing.

7 Header Cover letters use standard business letter style: They include: 1. the sender's address, 2. the recipient's contact information, 3. the date. 4. a salutation (e.g., "Dear Hiring Manager").

8 Introduction 1. The introduction briefly states the specific position desired, 2. and should be designed to catch the employer's immediate interest.

9 Body 1. The body highlights material in the resume or job application, 2. and explains why the job seeker is interested in the job and would be of value to the employer. 3. The body include skills, qualifications, and past experience.

10 Closing 1. A closing sums up the letter 2. and indicates the next step the applicant expects to take. 3. After the closing is a valediction ("Sincerely“ or “Respectfully yours”), 4. and then a signature line.
