2
How do animals stay warm in chilly waters? Blubber - a thin layer of adipose (fat) tissue. Helps to insulate an animal’s body.
3
Blubber (fat tissue) is made of lipids.
4
BUTTER WAX OIL Cell Membrane Hormones
5
Lipid Basics Made of C,H,O They are Hydrophobic/Nonpolar What is the monomer for lipids? Glycerol and 3 Fatty Acids
6
What functional groups do you see? Carboxyl group Methyl group
7
Where are lipids made in the cell? The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)! This is the tunnel like section around the nucleus that doesn’t have any bumps What are the ‘bumps’ on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum? Ribosomes!!
8
There are 3 types of Lipids 1)Triglycerides/Fats – Used for LONG term energy storage, insulation/protection
9
There are 3 types of Lipids 2) Phospholipids – Used in cell membranes What is the purpose of the cell membrane? Regulating what comes in/out of the cell (it is semipermeable)
10
There are 3 types of Lipids 3) Steroids – Used for fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E and K) and hormones What are hormones used for? Cell Signaling (cell texting – long distances)
11
Fatty acids can either be saturated or unsaturated Types of Fatty Acids Unsaturated fatty acids have a double bond which causes a kink in the chain. This makes them liquid at room temp and easier to break up in the body which is why they are better for you.
12
Fatty acids can either be saturated or unsaturated Types of Fatty Acids Phospholipid
13
Dehydration synthesis How are lipids assembled? How are lipids pulled apart? Hydrolysis
