(1) Finding Hypotheses
2
What to pick: Pick IV Pick DV Pick hypothesis/theory Pick method/paradigm Pick scale Evaluate scale, compare to short version, sample Or scale and DV i.e. hostility scale and health What else?
3
Some tricks: Take qualitative review and update Take older meta and update Take older meta and update, add subjective coding Find easily searchable name (e.g., attraction effect) Find easily “cited by” idea (e.g., scale)
4
How to pick? Some advantageous features… Topic with ES that vary in magnitude and direction Topic that involves controversies, inconsistencies Topic with diversity (multiple IV, DV, stimuli, etc) Topic with opportunity to apply many moderators Topic with interesting problem to address Topic that involves causal relationships Practical point of view, want enough primary studies (20-40) but not too many (100+) because hardest part of meta is finding studies (Step2)
5
Other ideas/thoughts?

I need help choosing (1) updating a 1999 qualitative review about studies directly testing ecological validity of jury research Pro: Topic falls within type of research I do 1999 qualitative review so finding studies is easy Two metas in 1 paper (jurors, trial medium) Con: Not many primary studies (27, 11, respectively) Most studies show null result, so how would that impact output from meta? i.e. ES, sig level, filedrawer-n, etc. Will I find moderators if ES is low, n.s., etc.? What else?
7
I need help choosing Meta on “implicit theories” (entity v incremental) Pros Topic falls within type of research I do Relatively easy to find studies since I have to find them for my dissertation Cons Implicit theory is scale, usually dichotomized, so I would be showing t-test effect upon x, y, z… is that interesting? Could maybe do meta on manipulation (some studies manipulate it), and if so, I won’t be able to know how many studies until start searching….
8
I need help choosing Attraction Effect / Asymmetric Dominance Effect Pros Easy to find studies because of name Contradictions in literature so could resolve those Cons Topic doesn’t fall within type of research I do. I haven’t read this literature so unforeseen issues or problems may arise?
