Clubs featured in the 18 th and 19 th Great Depression Young people’s church groups, Scouting and Guiding. Today internationally, nationally, and locally.

4 The nature of volunteers and voluntary groups Stanley Parker(1997) identifies four types of volunteer: 1. Altruistic volunteering 2. Market volunteering 3. Cause-serving volunteering 4. Leisure volunteering Robert Stebbins (1996): serious leisure

5 Voluntary groups: differences and similarities Similarities in patterns of activity and the ways in which clubs develop and decline. Open to all in principle, exclusiveness with high enrolment fees or membership systems. Clubs are not static, but changing, organization. Similarities in behaviour: social groups Dependent on support services

6 How many volunteers and voluntary organizations? Range is wide and diversified and no adequate classification has yet been made to cover all exist. 32% adults in UK, 2001, given unpaid help to a group or organization, and economic value £ 40 billion per year National voluntary organization

7 Engaging the public and private sectors With private and institutional bodies With public providers and public money With commercial bodies

8 The government and volunteerism Encourage links between the statutory, voluntary and community sectors. Financial support by government Policies are implemented to increase voluntary and community sector activity. CAF/The Youth Service

9 Volunteering in sports and the arts Volunteers have a key role to play in UK sport but need assistance to help motivation, ongoing support, and opportunities for training and development. Numbers of Volunteers have involved about arts. Coaching qualification /registered
