Chinese Culture Chinese culture is thousands of years old and their strong traditional values still exist today Traditional Family Roles Men- Old men make decisions and perform rituals to honor ancestors Women- duty was to marry, have children and care for husband’s parents Children- respect parents and care for them in their old age

The End of the Dynasties in China Dynasties had ruled China since the 21 st century BCE through the Mandate of Heaven Qing Dynasty-last of Chinese dynasties Attempted to keep western influences out of China. Attempted to preserve the “Middle Kingdom” by policy of isolationism and tradition. 1800’s-European countries wanted to trade with China, but they refused

Conflict with Western Influences Qing Dynasty unsuccessful with their attempt to stop western influences Led to the Opium Wars and China being divided by Great Britain, France, Russia and Japan into Spheres of Influence Treaty of Nanjing forces China to pay war costs. Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) Boxer Rebellion (1900) failed attempt to kick out European influences

Republic of China(ROC) Early 1900’s- rebellions begin to occur throughout China led by Sun Yat Sen February 12, 1912- Child emperor Hsian-T’ung gives up his throne Leads to the creation of the Republic of China(ROC) led by the Nationalist Party “Three Principles of the People” 1)Democracy – create a representative government 2)Nationalism – end foreign rule and take back complete control 3)Livelihood – raise the standard of living to strengthen its economy

Civil War in China 1921- Chinese Communist Party formed by students to take over China 1930- Civil War breaks out between the Nationalist and Communist Parties in China 1937- Japan invades China and both groups work together to fight October 1, 1949-Communist Party leader Mao Zedong declares the creation of the People’s Republic of China Seized farmland from large landowners and divided it amongst peasants Took control over personal industries and businesses in China

Reasons for the Communists’ Success Mao won support of peasants – land Mao won support of women Mao’s army used guerilla war tactics Many saw the Nationalist government as corrupt Many felt that the Nationalists allowed foreigners to dominate China.
