Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Serial ATA

PAGE 2 Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Why Serial ATA? n At the current speeds, data transfer in parallel only works over short distances n With larger distances the data transmission rate (frequency) must be reduced n Parallel cables & plugs are more expensive than serial n Serial cables are less error- prone than parallel n Serial cables are easier to bend within the chassis n Serial cables are thinner, don’t obstruct the air flow which is needed for cooling

PAGE 3 Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Serial ATA features n Data transmission rates of 150 MB/s (SATA 1) up to 300 MB/s (SATA 2) and 600 MB/s (SATA 3) n Physical data transfer using + and - 250 mV corresponding to the LVDS technology n 100% software compatibility between parallel and SATA n Point-to-point connections (no Master/Slave Jumper) n Hot Plug support n Cable length up to 1m

PAGE 4 Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Serial ATA n Power cable uses 15 connectors S-ATA drives may use 12V, 5V and 3,3V or any combination thereof All FCS power- supplies deliver 12V, 5V and 3,3V Pins are constructed to allow hot-plugging.

PAGE 5 Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Hot plug Serial ATA connector n Pins are staggered (have different lengths) to enable hot-plug

PAGE 6 Fujitsu Computer Systems Confidential Why serial signaling? n Why serial? Putting signals on a parallel cable is like cars on a freeway They may start abreast But after a while some have moved faster, some slower, some cars from behind may have caught up.
