How have political turning points impacted American history?

This lesson deals with political turning points. What do you think of when you hear the word “politics”?

When an event happens in history involving political decision, that changes the traditional pattern of politics, it's a turning point. Lets look at three examples of political turning points in our nations early history: Teddy Roosevelt American Isolationism after WW1 Reagan Revolution (rebirth of Conservative Movemement)

WWI (1914-1918) M A I N Why did USA get involved? Unrestricted Submarine warfare (mostly) Effects? Isolationism of 1920’s and 30’s. Disillusionment = Lost Generation (TS Elliot, Earnest Hemingway, FS Fitzgerald) Treaty of Versailles and Great Depression create perfect storm for WW2.

Impact of the New Deal on American society= Government grew to enormous size = high taxes. LBJ and the Great Society = High taxes and entitlement. Election of 1980= Reagan: “Government needs to go on a diet”. Government seen by many as no longer being a solution, but a problem. I. Global domination A. Think Nazi Germany….but potentially much more dangerous 1. not just contained within a small country. 2. same hate speech, propaganda, brainwashing techniques as the Nazi’s. B. Force extreme view of Islam on the World C. Most Muslims are peaceful, but……. http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/pages/opinion-polls.htm 1. 1 % = 15 million 2. According to this poll, 38 % of the Arab World said that 9/11 attacks were justified. 3. According to this stat, 570 million support Jihad. Should we be concerned? D. The word Jihad technically means “struggle”, but has been twisted to mean “Holy War” by Radical Muslims.

I. US support for Israel’s right to exist (1949) A. Jihad, or Holy War declared against Israel and her allies. II. Oil A. westernization of traditionally Islamic areas = anti- Americanism B. Eisenenhower / Carter Doctrine = US support for Saudi ruling family leads to resentment. III. Cold War A. USSR invades Afghanistan in 1979 leads to Jihad against any invading force of a Muslim country. 1. With USA aid, Mujahideen defeats the USSR. Bin Laden convinced that Jihad can defeat super power 2. Mujahideen becomes Al Qaeda (The Base) 3. Bin Laden once again proclaims Jihad against the USA in 1998

IV. Persian Gulf War 1990 / Operation Desert Storm 1991 (Push Iraq out of Kuwait) A. Bin Laden (Al Qaeda) declares that Persian Gulf War part of Global Jihad. B. 1993 bombing of WTC, 1998 US embassy attacks, 2000 USS Cole C. From 1972 – 9/11/2001 = 27 attacks on US Soil V. President Bush declares War on Terror after 9/11 A. Nation will not only focus on terrorists, but nations that harbor terrorists. Shift from reactionary to proactive. B. Along with numerous covert operations throughout the world, the War on Terror has led to two wars. C. A. Since 2001, there have been 42 attacks on US Soil

This is the last opportunity to prove your thesis. 1 paragraph (at least 5-7 sentences).
