P2P is not a legitimate use of university networks because of the copyright infringements that occur Brittany Lees Amanda Rosen Kayleigh O’Keefe Beth Treseder Ben Tripp Danai Giwa Timothy Garbinsky
2
Introduction How many of you have downloaded music, media etc illegally since arriving to the university?? Overwhelming statistics point to majority activity of p2p is illegal
3
the “attack” “fundamental to the progress of learning and culture” The network isn’t the fundamental part, it’s the information it contains “…serving mostly as a conduit for the latest Modest Mouse songs and Paris Hilton videos” (Villano).
4
E-reserves??? By the definition of P2P there exists no server and no client. However, in the case of blackboard, you the student are a client and blackboard is the server Teachers and students don’t have same access All students can’t communicate, only within classes registered
5
another “attack” University networks aren’t anonymous feasibility of monitoring Monetary cost of monitoring Does bandwidth really accomplish this?
6
Further refute Universities should pay for a legal downloading source for students this has nothing to do with academics and should therefore NOT be considered in a university budget Students can download songs legally with iTunes etc at their own expense
7
The Core Argument Vicarious Infringement: the overseer of a person or network is held responsible for the actions taken by its users or employees. In this case, the overseer is the university and the users are the students and professors. (Lohmann)
8
Illegal P2P Use Wastes University Time and Money Possible lawsuits Legal fees Responding to DMCA complaints Hiring more technology staff
9
Bandwidth Concerns Bandwidth= the amount of data that can be passed along a communication channel in a given period of time (dictionary. COM) Slows down other legitimate applications Expensive
10
Alternative Solutions If you want music... iTunes If you want friends files… Send them an e-mail If you need research materials/documents… Go to e-reserves in the library or school computer cluster Most of what is legally used on a P2P can be found on the internet
11
Conclusion Interesting Point about Duke and the iPod scenario Basically, P2P is not a legitimate use of university networks because it is used primarily for illegal downloading and the various “legal” portions can be accomplished elsewhere. ie Duke should not have a P2P network
