A MERICAN UNIFORMS Brown was the official color of Continental army. But it soon changed as the years went by, to red, blue, or brown. At the beginning of the war, uniform companies said the 13 colonies should wear unorganized uniforms. The Minute Men would usually have to supply their own guns and they had no uniforms. Blue facings (white button holes): North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Red facings: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia White facings: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut Buff facings: New York, New Jersey

B RITISH They were called lobster backs or red coats because of the red uniforms. The uniforms identify the rank and position of the soldier. Loyalist usually wore their own civilian clothes, but some wanted to wear a blue or red coat. They also wore headgear of bearskin caps, leather caps or tricorne hats depending on whether the troops were grenadiers, light infantry or battalion company men.
