8.4 Hyperbola 5/22/2013
2
Hyperbola Definition: is a conic section in which difference of distances of all the points from two fixed points (called `foci`) is constant Center: (h, k) Vertices: a distance from center. ●● Foci: c distance from center. Traverse axis: the segment that joins the vertices.

Equations of Hyperbolas aa a a Foci (h,k) (h,k)
4
Example 1: Rewrite each equation in standard form.
5
Example 2: Rewrite each equation in standard form.
6
Example 3: Find the center, vertices and foci of Note: Since y is the one with a 2, add/subtract a to the y coordinate of the center for the vertices and c for the foci. This way you don’t have to graph!!!
7
Example 4: Find the center, vertices and foci of Note: Since x is the one with a 2, add/subtract a to the x coordinate of the center for the vertices add/subtract c to find the foci.

Homework: WS 8.4 Odd problems only “I’m glad I know sign language, it’s pretty handy.”
