Management Requirements for Packet-based Timing Distribution draft-frost-tictoc-management-00.txt IETF 78, Maastricht, July 2010 Tim Frost, Greg Dowd – Symmetricom Laurent Montini – Cisco
2
Purpose of Draft Outline the requirements for management of packet-based synchronization systems Present the issues that need to be solved in the creation of an effective sync mgmt system Start a discussion over sync management, with the aim of getting more people involved
3
Elements of Sync Management Fault monitoring and reporting Performance and status monitoring of the synchronization equipment – Protocol-related parameters and data sets – Performance monitoring of packet slave clock Performance and status monitoring of the packet network related to timing distribution – Quality of the packet timing signal – Delay measurements on the network itself
4
Issues to be resolved What information must be maintained by synchronization functions? – E.g. Protocol-related data sets, clock status information What performance data related to synchronization are to be collected? – E.g. Clock output performance, input packet timing signal quality What alarms must be generated by synchronization functions? – E.g. Disconnection, holdover, low input signal quality, etc. How is the management information to be collected? – E.g. SNMP, protocol-specific means (e.g. PTP Mgmt. commands) How can network elements containing synchronization functions be discovered? – How does a synchronization network manager identify network elements that contain synchronization functions?
