Fission By Tony Chitty

Fission Nuclear Fission is the splitting of an atomic nucleus. Atomic bombs and nuclear reactors both perform nuclear fission Atomic bombs split unbalanced nuclei into smaller more stable nuclei. Nuclear reactors split a different type of uranium into smaller nuclei A chain reaction refers to a process in which neutrons released in fission produce an additional fission in at least one further nucleus. The nucleus in turn produces neutrons, and the process repeats. The process may be controlled (nuclear power) or uncontrolled (nuclear weapons).

Fission Fission Equation: U 236 92 141 56 Ba + 36 92 Kr + 3 1 0 n One isotope on left splitting up into products on the right.

Controlled nuclear fission Spontaneous nuclear fission

Fission Energy Released From Each Fission 165 MeV ~ kinetic energy of fission products 7 MeV ~ gamma rays 6 MeV ~ kinetic energy of the neutrons 7 MeV ~ energy from fission products 6 MeV ~ gamma rays from fission products 9 MeV ~ anti-neutrinos from fission products 200 MeV 1 MeV (million electron volts) = 1.609 x 10 -13 joules Chain reaction U 235 + n → fission + 2 or 3 n + 200 MeV
