Closing the Digital Divide By: Dennis Kwong, Danisa Blaser and Emily \O’Donnell
2
How does the closing of a digital divide in midlevel countries improve their socio-economic development ? Digital divide Socioeconomic development Midlevel countries
3
Hypothesis If there is a closing of a digital divide in midlevel countries then there will be an increase in their socio-economic development. Reasoning: – More digital literacy will create more technological knowledge that can be useful – passing information faster, – better communication throughout the country – education – sharing of information – opportunities for new markets to emerge (by more people knowing about them through digital knowledge like advertisements online) – Job opportunities/Job awareness – political, social, economic awareness (people can have more participation in civil society)
4
Assumption Our assumption is supported by Judith Mariscal – “The answer from this perspective is that IT (telecommunications) has the potential of improving the living conditions of disadvantaged groups by helping them increase their income. Telecommunications is a key infrastructure that promotes development through the combination of three factors; externalities, knowledge creation and regional development.”

Definitions regional development positive externalities knowledge creation endogenous growth theory

Limitations The limitation of this research is we didn’t analyze the extent in which the effect this increase in socio-economic development has on its participation of the global market. http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/section?c ontent=a771195237&fulltext=713240928

Re-introducing our hypothesis: If there is a closing of a digital divide in midlevel countries then there will be an increase in their socio-economic development. Our Conclusion: Our hypothesis is generally supported by our research. However, our findings indicated that closing the digital divide more prominently affects social development rather than economic factors. Only technological development on the firm level will have a significant impact on economic growth.
10
Future How does the closing of the digital divide between midlevel countries and advanced countries affect the way they interact with each other economically?
