Hydroelectric Power Diagram
3
History A hydro plant uses the force of falling water to make electricity A typical hydro plant is a system with three parts Electric plant Electric plant where the electricity is producedwhere the electricity is produced Dam Dam that can be opened or closed to control water flowthat can be opened or closed to control water flow Reservoir Reservoir where water can be storedwhere water can be stored
4
How does it work How do we get water from electricity? power source is used to turn a propeller piece called a turbine power source is used to turn a propeller piece called a turbine Which turns a metal shaft called the electric generator Which turns a metal shaft called the electric generator That is called the motor which produces electricity That is called the motor which produces electricity
5
The Generator
6
How does the Generator work? hydraulic turbine converts the energy of flowing water into mechanical energy A hydroelectric generator converts this mechanical energy into electricity.
7
Cost effects/ Environmental effects Cost efficient less time to design less time to design high capital cost but maintenance costs are only minimal high capital cost but maintenance costs are only minimal Environmental Effects advantage over fossil fueled generator plants advantage over fossil fueled generator plants clean clean renewable renewable green green
