Scoliosis Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, it’s a disorder in which there is a sideways curve of the spine, or backbone. Cristian Carlson
2
Cause! Is it an autosomal dominant gene? No, Scoliosis is said to be an autosomal dominant gene. Is it an autosomal recessive gene? No, it is not an autosomal recessive gene. Is it a sex-linked gene? No, scoliosis is not a sex-linked gene. Is it non disjunction? Nondisjunction is the failure of a chromosome pair to separate during meiosis, so no. Difference between an afflicted gene and a healthy one? An afflicted gene cannot function properly and is distorted unlike a healthy gene. What chromosome does scoliosis affect? Scoliosis affects chromosome 19. Scoliosis is a mutation.

Facts about the Disease
How often does it occur in the population? Occurs in about 2% of the population. Is it more frequent in men or females? Females are most likely to be affected. Is it popular in a certain ethnicity? Not common in a particular ethnicity. Does it affect a certain age bracket? Usually affects kids age

Symptoms of Scoliosis Noticeable curve of spine.
One shoulder or hip appears higher than other. Head is not centered over body. Shoulder blade may stick out. Ribs are higher on one side when bent over. Waistline flat on one side.

Testing and Screening Most scoliosis curves are detected on school screening exams. To determine the type of scoliosis the patient has they are bone examined and X-rayed. A scoliometer can be used to measure and estimate the rotation of the spinal curve. Skeletal age, as determined by the Risser sign, is also a helpful measure to find out the risk that the curve will get worse.
6
Treatment Braces (for spinal curve of degrees) halts the progression of the curve, temporarily corrects the spine. Surgery (for spinal curve of degrees) makes sure the curve does not get worse. Chiropractic treatment Electrical stimulation Nutritional supplements Most cases of scoliosis, especially mild ones, are not life- threatening. However, severe cases of scoliosis can cause the spine to curve so much that the chest cavity is constricted.

Other facts about Scoliosis
Scoliosis is not caused by activity such as exercise, sports, or carrying heavy objects. It does not typically cause back pain. There are different types of scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis being the most common. The other types of scoliosis consist of Degenerative scoliosis, Neuromuscular scoliosis, and Congenital scoliosis. If you do need treatment, you'll go to a doctor called an orthopedist Exercise is actually good for treatment on scoliosis!
