I. First Americans a. came from Asia b. while chasing food crossed the Bering Strait (Land Bridge) to Alaska c. primitive = hunters and gatherers d. nomads = culture that is always on the move ***over thousands of years NA migrated (moved) south to inhabit all of the Western Hemisphere***

II. Culture = the way of life of a certain group of people (language, clothing, religion, customs, diets…) (language, clothing, religion, customs, diets…) **culture is determined by the environment (land, resources, climate)**

III. Many Different Cultures Develop in N. & S. America Where you live effects how you live. examples: Inuit (Eskimo) – lived in the far north (arctic climate) Inuit (Eskimo) – lived in the far north (arctic climate) = live in ice houses (igloo), wear warm clothing, hunt whales & seals Pueblo – lived in the Southwest (desert climate) Pueblo – lived in the Southwest (desert climate) = live in Adobe (sun dried brick) homes, wear light clothing, use irrigation to farm

IV. Early Native American Cultures 1. Early Native Americans (10,000 – 5,000 years ago) were primitive = hunting / gathering (were nomadic) 2. Approximately 5,000 years ago more advanced cultures developed = farming / agriculture
