THE CONDITIONAL

ZERO CONDITIONAL ALWAYS HAPPENS

ZERO CONDITIONAL This will always happen. We are talking in general. IF can be replaced with WHEN You get water if you mix hydrogen and oxygen. Snakes bite if they are scared If babies are hungry, they cry When babies are hungry, they cry.

ZERO CONDITIONAL If + present simple, present simple. If people eat too much, they get fat. If you touch a fire, you get burned. People die if they don't eat.

FIRST CONDITIONAL MAY HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE

FIRST CONDITIONAL used with things which might happen in the future this describes possible things, which could easily come true. If I have enough money, I 'll buy some new shoes. She 'll be late if the train is delayed. She 'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon. If I see her, I 'll tell her.

FIRST CONDITIONAL if + present, future future + if + simple present If it rains, I won't go to the park. If I study today, I 'll go to the party tonight.

SECOND CONDITIONAL IMPOSSIBLE OR UNTRUE

SECOND CONDITIONAL Probably not going to happen. If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery) She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won't happen)

SECOND CONDITIONAL Impossible because it’s not true. If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so it's impossible for me to call him). If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

SECOND CONDITIONAL If + simple past, would + base form I/he/she/it are used with WERE If I was a boy X If I were a boy If my friend from Japan was here, X If my friend from Japan were here

THIRD CONDITIONAL PAST PATH NOT TAKEN

THIRD CONDITIONAL We use this for something that would be different if an action in the past were different. If I had studied, I would have passed. If he had seen the bear, he wouldn’t have gotten attacked.

THIRD CONDITIONAL IF + past perfect, would have ___ IF + past perfect, could have ____ If I had studied, I would have passed. If he had seen the bear, he wouldn’t have gotten attacked.

THIRD CONDITIONAL COULD HAVE is used for something you may have done, but maybe wouldn’t have. WOULD HAVE is used for the choice you probably would have made. If I had studied, I could have become a doctor. (But maybe I wouldn’t have) If I had studied, I would have passed.
