Controlling Floods Heavy rainfall over many days, overflowing rivers, and severe storms all cause floods. Technology for controlling floods offers both benefits and drawbacks.

Dams and Reservoirs Dam: a wall across a river. Reservoir: river water that collects into an artificial lake behind a dam.
