Do Now In your journals, write down: ●One word that is the product of language change/contact (and explain how) ●Two concepts/items that have different ways of being expressed different regions (i.e. soda/pop in English, torta/pastel in Spanish)

Dialect Map activity ● Draw borders on the maps and label where you think different people speak in different accents, dialects, or languages. Add a word or two that characterize the dialect. ● It’s OK to have 2+ languages or dialects in the same region. ● You can shade in different areas if you like.

Variation in Language People speak in different ways depending on: ● Geography ● Ethno-racial identity ● Age ● Gender ● Class ● Communities of Practice This variation is socially significant: people make judgments about others based on the way they speak
