What did your parent(s), friend, teacher, or even you think about your manner. Use your white board. Did you ever do it again?

3 Essential Question Why is it important to use proper netiquette when texting and chatting? How can improper netiquette affect me and my network of friends? What is a blog and why do I have to use proper netiquette when blogging?

4 Objective Students will be able to identify netiquette including the use of texting, social networking, blogs and chatting.

5 What is netiquette? Think about the word “net” and think about the word “etiquette”. Proper Internet etiquette is often referred to as Netiquette (we learned this on 2.4.15).

6 What is Proper Netiquette When Texting Know the Recipient – friend vs. boss E.g. “IDK the answer TTYL” vs. “I don’t know the answer, I will discuss it with you later”. Anticipate unintentional misinterpretation – symbols, codes to represent thoughts, ideas and emotions. Texting has its own complexity and limitation. Try to prevent misinterpretation with brief message. Unplug yourself for a while. Sometimes being unavailable can be healthy – everything in moderation, including texting. Don’t text and drive The likelihood of having an accident increases dramatically if the driver is texting behind the wheel.

7 What is proper netiquette when chatting? Don’t give out personal information such as your address, telephone number, parents’ work address or name and location of your school. Don’t agree to get together with someone you meet online without checking with your parents. If your parents agree, make sure that it is in a public place. Don’t send a person your picture or anything else without first checking with your parents. Don’t respond to any message that are mean or in anyway make you feel uncomfortable. Do talk to your parents so that you can set up rules for going online. Don’t access other areas or break these rules without your parents permission. Don’t use all CAPS.

9 Basic Netiquette for Blogging Before you start blogging lurk around to determine whether or not it is valuable for you to join. Read the FAQs (frequently asked questions). When posting do not: Using non-descriptive title such as “HELP!” Post off-topic pleas for help into existing threads AKA thread jacking. Fail to post link to the article, image, page or post you refer to. Fail to provide detailed description of what you did and what happened when you did it. Pose an email address in a form spam. Use CAPS. Use no CAPS. Excessive punctuations - ???? !!!!! Use profanity. Expect instant responses to your questions. Post personal attacks. Fail to thank those who help you.

10 Guided Practice Get into groups of fours. Be creative. Have fun. Be very creative. Imagine you are the computer. Imagine you are the sender. Imagine you are the receiver.

11 Guided Practice Write down one example of an IMPROPER way to talk to your teacher or boss via texting messaging and write down one example of a PROPER way to talk to your teacher or boss via text messaging. Write down a scenario where a child has broken a rule pertaining to using a chat room and what might happen if the child breaks that rule. Write down a scenario where a not using proper netiquette caused someone to lose their job, not get into a college, or not get a letter of recommendation. Write down a scenario where a person used improper netiquette on an online blog.

12 Independent Practice List THREE important key points that you learned today and elaborate on each key point. One paragraph (at least 5 sentences). Explain the importance of each of the points. Why are they important to you?
