Planning of the EUSO-BALLOON project Sylvie Dagoret-Campagne on behalf of the JEM-EUSO collaboration, EUSO-BALLOON project manager LAL/France EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 1

Main phases of the project: Phase A : requirements & feasibility study Sept 14 th 2011 to Feb 2 nd 2012, – Start by Kick-off meeting, End by Preliminary Requirements Review, Phase B : full design study including interfaces (Sept 2012- July 2012) – Start by Preliminary Requirements review, End by Preliminary Design Review – Prototypes for validation of some fabrication processes Phase C&D : Fabrication of the flight models, tests and Integration (Jan 2013-May 2013) EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 2

The procurement or the Fabrication of some « components » before PDR  may start earlier than PDR because of the delays for Lenses, MAPMT, ASICs EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 3

Prototypes fabrication During Phase B, mostly on PDM components  EC-Unit mechanical proto and proto,  HV& Switches  PDM boards EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 4

Flight models production and tests  In phase C&D  CPU starts earlier because of a long software development EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 6

Fabrication of the mechanical parts Phase C&D  PDM  DP  Instrument EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 7

Integration of the systems into the telescope At the end of phase C&D, Integration of PDM and DP in parallel, independently Then integration of the electronics, Then integration inside the telescope instrument. EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 8

Conclusions on the planning Very short-compressed schedule,  First Balloon flight in summer 2013, Phase A : 4,5 months ( benefit from earlier studies JEM- EUSO),  But some critical parts (EC, PDM) need to be tested, validated, Phase B : 6 months for prototype machining especially for PDM subsystems, Phase C&D : 10 months for construction, tests and integration: – Delivery of the instrument in may 2013 EUSO BALLOON PHASE A REVIEW (preliminary requirements) 10
