Association for Progressive Communications Web 2.0 From networking documents to networking people

Association for Progressive Communications But what was 1.0? In the beginning we got excited about the web because... access to the internet turned writers into publishers and readers into users local newsletters, projects and campaigns could reach global audiences The web grew fast More and more writers uploaded content More and more users searched for content to read

Association for Progressive Communications Then things started to change... Writing, publishing, uploading, searching, reading and using started to get blurred Users became Participants As they read they could: –Tag (classify or 'code' their content) –Contribute (to content created by others) –Podcast (share content in audio format) –Blog (individual voices...) –Comment (respond, debate, etc.) The web became a social space to actively engage with readers and writers and their content. Web 1.0 was evolving into Web 2.0

Association for Progressive Communications How was that possible? The evolution of Rich Internet Applications (RIA)... focused on the user experience developed technologies using –flash animations –ajax based solutions –xml separating form from content allowing people to interact with the content –drag and drop it –work on it –shape it –add value to it

Association for Progressive Communications So what did we end up with? A Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) RSS (syndication) feeds for selecting, receiving and sharing content on demand Mashups - mixing data from multiple sources into customized, interactive Web applications Podcasts – people speaking directly to people Wikis – spaces to collaborate, think, share knowledge and learn Blogs - a commentary on the world that anyone can join in with

Association for Progressive Communications And why does it matter? Because the social web of two dot zero has provided spaces for many voices... of people who would rather speak than write of people who are more traditionally quiet or silent of people who want to the right of reply of people who want to create things together
