A confined space is an enclosure with insufficient natural ventilation into which occasional entry is made for the purposes of maintenance, repair and/or cleaning and that is constructed in such a way that dangerous air contamination cannot be prevented or removed by ventilation through openings in the enclosure. DEFINITION Confined spaces also include enclosures in which the openings are so remote or small that it is difficult to enter or to remove of a worker who is suddenly overcome. 5 Specific hazards Lack of oxygen Chemical hazard Explosion Access/evacuation General hazards Accidental start-up, Electric shock, Manual handling, Noise, Lack of light, Cave-in, Radiation, etc. HAZARDS EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit

Visible at the entrance points Available from the CERN Stores (SCEM No. 5055833152). SIGNAGE EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit

CERN SAFETY RULE Defines the types of hazards, Proposes basic precautionary measures, Reiterates the need for the personnel concerned to be trained. EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit

ENTRY PERMIT Entry into any confined space for work requires a permit that is: displayed at the site, signed by the supervisor, the personnel concerned and the Fire Brigade. Maximum validity: 1 day. The HSE Unit must be consulted if: the work is expected to take longer than one day, the work presents a chemical or explosion hazard, the personnel concerned are not trained. EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit

THE ROLE OF THE TSO Participate Observe Check Stop EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit

Attending this presentation does not exempt you from the requirement to attend the CERN- specific “Confined Space s ” training course. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION EDMS n.848384 Territorial Safety Officer (TSO) - Initial HSE Unit
