2. + History of mobiles The first mobile phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper. It was a Motorola DynaTAC prototype. On April 3 rd 1973, he called his rival Joel Engel, head of research at AT&T's Bell Labs while he was walking the streets of New York City. In the 1940s, Motorola developed the Walkie-Talkie, a large hand-held two-way radio for the US military, and a backpacked two-way radio. The USSR tested their own successful version of a radio mobile phone mounted inside a car. The first modern handheld cell phone was invented in 1973 when Motorola invented the first cellular portable telephone to be commercialised, known as Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. Soon, many companies started coming out with different mobile phones. The Motorola StarTac was the first phone in the world with Vibrating alert function. It was released in North America on January 3, 1996. By 2003, Blackberry begun to take the market by storm. On January 9, 2007 Apple launched the iPhone to the public.
