Technology for Farmers in Developing Nations By: Craig Bishop, Charudatta Choudhari, Michelle Garofalo, Sihan Liu, and Siddarth Ravi
2
Problem Statement Farmers in the Cooperative KGPB in Borgne, Haiti have requested help to obtain more income from their agricultural products by transforming them for export or by implementing improved storage methods to reduce waste and preserve crops to be later sold during the hungry season. Improving the quality and value of the products and getting organic, shade grown, or fair certification could also allow for products to be sold for export and have a higher profit for their coffee and chocolate. Motivations Highlight Issues Consequence Main Problem Low Return on Investment Weather Conditions Unavailability of Technology No defined Quality Standard No Storage Facilities Transportation Problems Unaware of Selling Processes Low Profit Excessive Waste

Stakeholders Haitian Farmers Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) MSD Students Financial Supporters (Potentially RIT funding or Local Company funding) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Haiti

Research ●The main crops are: ○cocoa ○coffee ○yams ○oranges ○grapefruit ○pineapple ○mango ○breadfruit ●Possible Avenues to Consider ○manual or solar-powered juicers ○extracting essential oils ○transforming the product (example: breadfruit → flour) ○storage solutions for longer shelf life http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil e:Artocarpus_altilis_(fruit).jpg http://www.healthbanquet.co m/can-hurricane-manual- juicer-make-almond- milk.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F ile:Cocoa_beans_P1410151.JPG

Various Concerns (as of now) Contacting more stakeholders ●Waiting for responses - emailing/calling again Determining which direction to approach: ●Focusing on one crop and multiple ways to optimize it? ●Different processes for various crops? ●Transportation of goods ●Storage capabilities for harvests Will need to evaluate and decide upon soon - prior to development of the VOE

Questions? ●Objective Tree: ○Are there any other safety concerns we should include? ○Is the order of importance appropriate? ●Stakeholders: ○Are there stakeholders that have not been included? ●Presentation skills ○How can we improve? ●Any questions, comments, suggestions, feedback?
