They seek him here, they seek him there, His clothes are loud, but never square. It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best, 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion. And when he does his little rounds, 'Round the boutiques of London Town, Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends, 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion. Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is). He thinks he is a flower to be looked at, And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight, He feels a dedicated follower of fashion. Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is). There's one thing that he loves and that is flattery. One week he's in polka-dots, the next week he is in stripes. 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion. They seek him here, they seek him there, In Regent Street and Leicester Square. Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on, Each one an dedicated follower of fashion. Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is). His world is built 'round discotheques and parties. This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion. Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is). He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly. In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be, 'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion. He's a dedicated follower of fashion. He's a dedicated follower of fashion. Two inferences I can make are 1. 2. Were the media right about the Mods and Rockers?
4
What was the difference between the Mods and the Rockers? Saw themselves as sophisticated, took pride in their appearance, listened to rhythm and blues, rode scooters Wore leather jackets, more aggressive look, slicked back hair, listened to heavier rock music, drove big motorbikes

http://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=1PNChvwTkA0 Quadrophenia was a British film made in 1979 about the events of 1964 when two rival gangs – the Mods and the Rockers – went on the rampage throughout several British coastal towns. Does the fact that the film was made 15 years after the events mean that it is useless to us as historians?

In pairs, read Source B and Source C. 1.In no more than twenty words for each source, summarise what each one is saying happened at Clacton. Which source is a more reliable portrayal of the behaviour of Mods and Rockers in the 1960s? 2.Which of the sources is more useful for a historian in finding out what actually happened? Feel free to highlight or annotate the source (Think about Nature, Origin and Purpose)
7
1. Summarise the source. Do you understand what it is saying? Can you paraphrase it? 2. Deduce, interpret and infer. What is the author’s viewpoint? Step 1. Make sure you understand what you are reading. You will be surprised at how many students fall at this hurdle

Source toolkit- reliability Nature- what is the nature of the source? What type of source is it? Photograph? Poster? Cartoon? Newspaper article? History book? Fiction? Propaganda? Poem? Interview? Origin (Who made the source? What is their background? Are they reliable?) Eye witness, historian, politician, journalist, soldier, victim, company, protester… Purpose (why was the source made?) To… mock, satirise, amuse, criticise, inform, report, review, shock, anger, promote etc. Tone and Language (what words and phrases are used?) Positive, negative, harsh, emotive, mocking, serious, passionate, damning, critical, offensive, abusive, sensational, over the top, hyperbolic, patriotic, racist… Contextual Knowledge/ cross reference (what do you already know?) When was it written? What was happening? Does it match up with your knowledge?

Turn it into a 20 word tweet: Source B….. Turn it into a 20 word tweet: Source C….. Write down some notes on its NOP: Source B The Wild Ones The Wild Ones invaded the seaside town of Clacton yesterday – 1,000 fighting, drinking, roaring, rampaging teenagers on scooters and motorcycles. Leather jacketed youths and girls attacked people in the streets, turned over parked cars, broke into beach huts, smashed windows and fought with rival gangs. From an article in the Daily Mirror newspaper, March 1964 Source C Most of the teenagers at Clacton had not come to fight but to hang around, vaguely hoping they might meet some girls, and they were bored and aimless rather than crazed with bloodlust. Innocent families were not trampled underfoot on the beaches: the weather was so cold and wet the teenagers had the beach to themselves. There was no evidence of drink or drugs or gang warfare. From a history book published in 2006

Answer A The message of the cartoonist is that the young people who have been fighting against each other are ignorant morons who are violent and out of control. The cartoonist is clearly being negative about young people. This can be seen by the way that the cartoonist has drawn the boy. He has run over a policeman and is carrying weapons in his pockets and there are more on the floor. He has been drawn to look stupid and seems to be suggesting that the only reason he has been involved in violence is because he is bored and has nothing to do. This answer would get a level ___. This is because Answer C The message of the cartoonist is that the young people who have been fighting against each other are ignorant morons who are violent and out of control. The cartoonist is clearly being negative about young people. We can see from the bike that the youth has been to Clacton and the weapons and run-over policeman suggest he has been involved in the violence there. Many young people joined gangs like the mods and rockers during the 1960s and these gangs clashed throughout 1964 in seaside resorts like Clacton, Margate and Brighton. This answer would get a level ___. This is because Answer B The message of the cartoonist is that the young people who have been fighting against each other are ignorant morons who are violent and out of control. The cartoonist is clearly being negative about young people. During the 1964 there were various clashes between mods and rockers at seaside resorts in England like Clacton, Margate and Brighton. Many people believed that the increased freedom enjoyed by teenagers in the 1950s and 1960s, together with their greater wealth, meant that some young people were getting out of control. This answer would get a level ___. This is because
