3 Realism Showed how people really were rather than fantasy Writers focused on the psychology of human behavior They created characters who struggled with these real problems The truth Wrote about the motivations, behaviors, and actions of real people

4 Realism realism is a technique, it also denotes a particular kind of subject matter, especially the representation of middle-class life. Character is more important than action and plot; complex ethical choices are often the subject. Events will usually be believable. Realistic novels avoid the sensational, dramatic elements of naturalistic novels and romances.

5 Autobiography A book about the life of a person, written by that person. May be based entirely on the writer's memory
