Lessons 6.1 and 6.2 OBJ: To solve inequalities using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
2
Graph of an Inequality The set of points that represent all solutions. Open endpoint Closed endpoint
3
Equivalent Inequalities Inequalities that have the same solution. Reverse the symbol.
4
Addition Property of Inequality Adding the same number to each side of an inequality produces an equivalent inequality. If a>b, then a+c> b+c If a<b, then a+c<b+c
5
Subtraction Property of Inequality Subtracting the same number from each side of an inequality produces an equivalent inequality. If a>b, then a-c>b-c If a<b, then a-c<b-c
6
Multiplication Property of Inequality Multiplying each side of an inequality by a positive number produces an equivalent inequality. Multiplying each side of an inequality by a negative number and reversing the direction of the inequality symbol produces an equivalent inequality.
7
Division Property of Inequality Dividing each side of an inequality by a positive number produces and equivalent inequality. Dividing each side of an inequality by a negative number and reversing the direction of the inequality symbol produces an equivalent inequality.
